School Holidays - By Mrs Rees
School holidays
The school holidays are nearly here! Below are some simple, practical ideas that may help keep your child engaged, calm, and happy during the break:
- Keep a light routine
Even a simple plan written on a calendar or whiteboard can give children a sense of structure. Try including meals, bedtimes, and one or two activities for each day. - Get moving outdoors
Fresh air and exercise can do wonders for mood and energy. Some low-cost options include:
- A trip to the local park or playground
- Beach walks or bush trails
- Bike or scooter rides
- Backyard obstacle courses or water play
- Creative time at home
Encourage creativity with activities like:
- Drawing, painting, or craft using recycled materials
- Baking simple recipes together
- Building with Lego, blocks, or puzzles
- Putting on a “family performance” (dancing, singing, or a play)
- Quiet and calming options
Children also need downtime to recharge. Try:
- Reading together or visiting the library
- Listening to audiobooks or calming music
- Practicing mindfulness apps or short breathing exercises
- A family movie night with blankets and popcorn
- Connect with others
Holidays are a great time to strengthen relationships:
- Organise a playdate or family catch-up
- Involve children in cooking or chores as a team
- Share daily highlights at dinner (one good thing from the day)
- Parent tip – look after yourself too!
Plan a few small moments just for you – a coffee with a friend, a walk, or quiet reading time. Caring for yourself helps you support your child more effectively.
Wishing you all a safe, happy, and restful holiday period.
